Description: Modern energy codes have placed an increasing emphasis on controlling air leakage into and out of residential buildings. To accomplish this goal, builders must execute a thorough air sealing strategy and proceed with verification through blower door testing. This session will provide a comprehensive look at airtightness in homes, including a look at the fundamentals of air flow through building assemblies. This discussion will include a focus on both code-mandated and above-code strategies that lead to a high-performance building.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the fundamental principles of airflow in buildings, including the factors that impact pressure differences across the building enclosure.
- Discuss common approaches to sealing gaps and cracks in building enclosures, including material options that impact constructability and budget.
- Review current code requirements for verification of building airtightness, including a deeper dive into how blower door tests provide insight into building performance.
- Understand the challenges facing the residential construction industry as builders continue to seek new ways to meet airtightness goals and requirements.
