This session will begin with an overview of the benefits of energy code compliance and enforcement, including reduced energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy resilience. The program will highlight key differences between the 2009 and 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), along with a focus on measures that have been found to have low compliance rates, high energy impacts, or a combination of both. This program will focus heavily on air sealing verification and whole-house ventilation. DOE energy code field studies showed in numerous states that air sealing has the greatest energy savings potential given typical compliance rates under the 3 ACH50 requirement. Whole-house ventilation is essential for occupant health and building durability and the energy code has requirements to limit fan energy use. In addition, duct leakage was shown to be the biggest energy waster in Pennsylvania under the 2009 IECC and so will also be an area of focus. Performance testing and mechanical ventilation requirements will be presented in conjunction with a review of an HVAC design worksheet and Duct and Envelope Testing (DET) verification form. The program will also cover duct insulation, HVAC controls, piping insulation and circulating service hot water requirements, dampers, lighting, and HVAC equipment sizing.

1. Describe important changes that occurred between the 2009 and 2015 IECC Residential Provisions.
2. Identify key air barrier details necessary to meet code and obtain 3 ACH50.
3. Determine compliance with mechanical systems including duct leakage and whole-house ventilation requirements.
4. Understand when to collect and how to review blower door and duct leakage testing documentation.
